Calls for Entry
UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in Downtown New Bedford is accepting submissions to its exhibition inspired by our perceptions of French culture. Professional artists of all media including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, sound art, video, or installation are asked to consider Paris – the idea, the reality and the fantasy. How did Paris enter our collective minds and how can we portray it? What does “Paris” represent for us? How does Paris act as America’s aspirational or elegant self?
Do you like Paris in the Springtime, the Summer, the Winter, or Fall? Is there a Paris within us? Have you read authors who talk about Paris or are you inspired by artworks associated with the city? As you travel its streets in your mind, are you wearing Chanel, Dior, and/or a beret, accompanying Audrey Tautou, or Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo, in a film by Truffaut, Godard, Varda or Woody Allen? What is it about Paris that spells love, desire, elegance, taste, or the avant-garde and freedom? Is it Paris imagined or is it real – and do we even care? 715 Purchase St. New Bedford, MA 02740
Deadline: April 24, 2015

Wild, wild wilderness, it’s grandeur and grace epically and intimately explored through photography.
Humans have always looked upon the beauty, majesty, and ingenuity of the world around them with reverent wonder. The regular rhythms of the sun and moon, the myriads of living creatures in all their splendid diversity, the magnificence of a flower, a butterfly’s wings or a snow crystal – The ancient Greeks aptly called the universe kosmos, a word denoting order and harmony. This underlying order is reflected in many intriguing patterns in nature.
Many of nature’s patterns are related to the golden section and the Fibonacci numbers. For instance, the golden spiral is a logarithmic or equiangular spiral – a type of spiral found in unicellular foraminifera, sunflowers, seashells, animal horns and tusks, beaks and claws, whirlpools, hurricanes, and spiral galaxies.
Darkroom Gallery is calling for photography that investigates this intrinsic magic in the natural world. From macro shots to large scale landscapes show us your examples of this otherworldly complexity within our natural realm.

DEADLINE June 10th, 2015 Midnight EST
Conflict and resolution, photography that documents the dynamic power-struggles in our world and conversely, the moments of calm.
Humankind is in a constant state of conflict. As described by the famous Karl Marx theory: society is in a state of perpetual conflict due to competition for limited resources. One can see that is true if you simply watch a broadcast news program.
From civil rights, to gay rights to global terrorism, our world is a bubbling cauldron of adversarial commotion. And it seems it has always been this way. History textbook pages merely skim the surface when if comes to wars and hypocrisy. Cultural misunderstandings, power-struggles and discrimination easily erupt into violence.
Darkroom Gallery is calling for photography that investigates the relationship between conflict and photography, exploring the types of photographs created during turmoil, as well the times of peace. We are interested in the progression of war: from the acts that instigate armed conflict to “the fight,” to victory and defeat, and photos that memorialize a time, its combatants, and its victims. Images playing with symbolism and allegory are well suited for this exhibit.
We ask you to think outside the box. This theme of conflict can be expressed intimately, quietly behind civilian curtains as well as on the battlefield.
